Dearborn Mural
The Dearborn mural project stands as an extraordinary testament to the collaborative efforts of the city and its residents. It represents a remarkable city project that was made possible through the generous funding provided by Dearborn Funds, demonstrating the community's dedication to supporting and nurturing the arts.
The creation of this masterpiece involved a dynamic partnership between the Pop design team (Pockets Of Perception design team) and the talented artist, Zack Curtis. As a team, they brought this monumental artwork to life with their skills, visions, and passion.
Countless hours were invested in the intricate planning and meticulous execution of this artwork. The synergy between the pop design team and Zack Curtis served as the driving force behind the mural's breathtaking composition.

The Mural’s Significance
It is important to note that the mural's significance extends far beyond its aesthetic appeal. At the core of this year's mural project was a powerful mission to ensure that hijabis within the community felt truly seen and represented. Given the significant number of hijabis residing within Dearborn, the project aimed to celebrate their identity and foster a sense of inclusivity. The pop design team and Zack Curtis dedicated themselves to this mission, working tirelessly to bring their vision to life on the city's walls.
Countless hours were poured into the creative process as the team conceptualized and refined a design that would authentically capture the essence of hijabi culture. Their collective efforts resulted in a stunningly beautiful design that eloquently showcased the diverse stories and experiences of hijabis in Dearborn.
A Journey of Honor and Responsibility
I am deeply humbled to find myself at the very center of this magnificent art piece. Never before have I witnessed a mural of such grandeur within our city; in fact, it stands as the largest mural ever created here.
As individuals reach out to me with heartfelt messages expressing gratitude for representing them and serving as a role model for the younger generation, my heart is filled with warmth. However, these messages also bring about a sense of responsibility and, to some extent, pressure. I have been entrusted with the task of embodying an entire community, culture, and religion.
I was chosen for this honor due to my involvement in community work and the arts. Through the workshops I conduct, I strive to create unity within our community. The weight of this responsibility fills me with a profound sense of honor and gratitude, as being selected for such a role is not a common occurrence. I am truly overjoyed and immensely proud!
Artist Statement
Our mural is a representation of the beautiful and important community it is a part of. We wanted our central figures to reflect real people in the community, and to emphasize the importance of uplifting and empowering the next generation.
The flowers included in the mural were added to bring the beauty of flora to the school. We also wanted this nature to represent the vibrant diversity of the community - many of the flowers in the mural are the national flower of some of the countries that families in the community are connected to.
The teapot and cups reflect important community traditions and generosity. The bird, known for its migrations, embodies a spirit of freedom and hope.
The volleyball and soccer players emphasize the importance of these sports to the talented students of Salina Intermediate. The number 29 on the volleyball player's jersey pays homage to the history of the south end of Dearborn and the 29 court trials that secured these neighborhoods. The athletes play among welcoming houses and a studying peer to celebrate that the students of this school can thrive in the environment they've grown up in, surrounded by people who love and support them.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who participated in the creation, execution, and support of this project. To the artists, craftsmen, planners, and supporters, your contributions have been invaluable. Your dedication, creativity, and belief in the power of art have made this project a remarkable success. Thank you for uniting in pursuit of our shared vision.
