Art Collection 101: How to Start Building Your Own Art Collection
As an artist myself, I enjoy both creating and examining art whether it is displayed at my home or showcased in an art gallery. It seems daunting to start your own collection of art, which is why I'd like to offer you some tips on how to start your own collection of art that resonates with you. Building your own art collection would be rewarding in the end as it provides a rather exciting journey of self-expression and appreciation of creativity.
Tips on How to Start Your Own Art Collection
To start your art collection, you need to set up a few points to make it easier and more organized. As the task of starting from scratch is overwhelming, some key points would help point you in the right direction.
Set a Budget
The prices of art pieces vary immensely, some have crazy price tags, while others are more affordable. Determine how much you want to invest in art. Make sure to set the maximum limit per art piece, or you can set the amount of money to spend monthly and divide by the times you are out hunting for new art to show off in your house. This will help you sustain and enjoy the process without exceeding what you can afford. Keep in mind that art is an investment, but it should also be something you love and cherish.
You can find a variety of paintings and prints that suit everyone’s taste on my website, it includes both abstract and figurative ones. You can check some of these affordable prints here.
Identify Your Taste
Art is the reflection of your taste and style. Make sure to write down the things you like to have in an art piece, whether it is nature, love, or neutral themes, and see which fits more into your style and your home color palette. It is very crucial to reflect and ask yourself some questions like if you prefer abstract art like this painting here or figurative ones like . Are you looking for a certain message behind the painting you want it to convey? One of my drawing, You Belong , has that, as it represents optimism and excitement about the future, it whispers to you: “There are places that you haven’t been where you belong.”
Connect with the Specialists
Build relationships with artists to help you figure out and learn more about art. There are many places where you can meet and share your thoughts. Artists have their workshops and studios and art classes where not only do they teach art, but also, show their art directly. This will provide insight into their creative process and see art from their perspective. They might explain a piece from another perspective that you did not see.
I provide some art classes at Mommy and Me classes if you want to register here for a fun and creative canvas class where you and your child (ren) will paint together to create an adorable canvas set. You can also check my ICA Iqraa Library Farmington Hills Workshop here.
Do Your Homework and Research
Educate yourself by reading about different forms of art in the world. Read through the art movement and genres of art. Make sure to check social media and visit museums, galleries, and exhibitions to understand the rich history of art and the current trends in art. This will ensure that you are knowledgeable about the pieces you are looking for and understand better what makes them good art to you. When you see art, you will get a better understanding of various techniques and styles by different artists. I love to talk about art and the story behind creating a piece during my classes or having a chat with an art lover as well.
Don’t Rush and Enjoy the Journey
Art collection is a journey that does not require a rushed decision. It takes time to build on your collection. The exploration of personal preference, research, and reflection on art pieces is a process that needs time. Each piece you acquire tells a story and becomes a part of your unique narrative. Let your collection reflect your passion and curiosity for the world of art.
In conclusion, building your own art collection is a unique enriching experience. It transcends you to the world of creativity, culture, and beauty. Whether you are drawn to abstract or figurative art, the world of art is diverse and has a place for everything. With the right mindset, patience, and dedication, your collection will become a testament to your passion for art and a source of inspiration for years to come. Embrace the journey and let your art collection reflect your unique artistic vision.
